“I love feeling confident that I know how to do this job”

Hi my name is Declan I am 25 years old.

I have had a few casual jobs but nothing long-term. I think my lack of experience has been a bit of a barrier to employment, I spent four years at University studying but then didn’t finish my degree because I had failed a couple of units and I ran out of time with my Centrelink payments. I needed to start looking for work. 

The search for work was stressful because I had only ever found jobs through friends and now I had to start doing it all on my own. I also hadn’t updated my resume since high school and didn’t know where to start. 

I started seeing a JobActive provider but I didn’t find it very helpful, I decided to apply for the Hamlet program because it seemed like a really good way to build my skills as I knew I wanted to work in hospitality.

At first at Hamlet I was hyper aware that I didn’t want to mess anything up but the staff really made me feel at ease and I started to really enjoy it. 

I love feeling confident that I know how to do this job. I can look out at the customers and know what I need to do next. Hamlet has really helped me build skills in a number of different areas and I feel a lot more confident now, I feel like I could find a job in this industry and have the ability to do it really well.
