“I had no idea that getting a job was not an easy task”

Hi I’m Jack and I am 20.

I’ve been part of Hamlet’s work experience program for over a year and I am very grateful to them for what I have achieved. If I hadn’t joined them, I’m not exactly sure where I would be now.

After I finished school, I wanted to get a job as soon as possible and start earning money but I had no idea that getting a job was not an easy task. My parents told me “You can’t just walk in, ask for a job and expect them to just give one to you”. I found them annoying at first, but they were right.

When I was 18, a family friend of ours told us about Hamlet’s work experience program. At first I was a little interested, but when I read about it on the Hamlet website I got excited and wanted to join. I was a little nervous before the start of my first shift, but as we took things slowly, my confidence built up and I started to really enjoy it too.

Today I feel very confident about working in any environment that’s similar to Hamlet. I have developed new skills such has how to serve customers, upsell items, cash handling and coffee making. As a person who is on the spectrum, they also helped me with my social skills as well. I have references for my resume, I’m very confident about getting my first job and I owe it all to the team at Hamlet.

My superhero power would be:
The ability to control earth. Launch rocks at my enemies and create pillars to stop runaway criminals in their tracks.

Something I love:
Singing and playing my guitar in front of people
